Why I bought a Stylus for my iPad
While eliminating greasy finger marks is not the only reason to buy a stylus for your iPad, it is likely to be the major reason for most people. I certainly got tired of wiping down my screen several times a day, but honestly that is not the reason I bought this. I bought it for drawing.
9 commentsHow to use a multimeter to test batteries, phone jacks, cables and more
The woman seemed so anxious and distracted that I told the clerk to go ahead and help her first. She blurted out a tale of woe about some electrical thing. Her husband had sent her out to buy a "continuity tester". The clerk shook his head sorrowfully and said he didn't think they had anything like that. I had to intervene. "Sure you do", I said, "She needs a multimeter".
9 commentsAndroid, Apple or something else entirely?
If you are an Apple bigot (I'm a bit of that) and see a friend buy an Android or a Microsoft product, be happy. That purchase annoys Apple and will cause them to work harder to innovate. Every Android maker and Microsoft view the purchase of an iPhone or iPad in the same way: how can we improve our products to make more people want ours?
3 commentsAmazon Kindle - a contrary review
This review is for people who are considering a new or used Kindle and are comparing it to the Kindle Fire, an iPad or an Android tablet. If that's you, I'll go right to the punch line: you probably don't want a Kindle. You might want a Kindle Fire, but the less expensive versions are not really what all the glowing reviews make them out to be. The base Kindles do have one advantage: extended battery life. All other supposed features are actually compromises of dubious value.
13 commentsCopying pictures back to your digital camera
The first time I heard of someone wanting to copy pictures from their computer to their digital camera, it was because a neighbors son had helped his mother copy pictures to her computer and then assumed that she no longer needed them on the camera. He very helpfully deleted all of them. Mom was quite upset when she found her camera empty. Yes, she did want the pictures on her computer and she was happy to have them, but she also liked showing off her grandchildren from the camera, too.

To the best of my knowledge, this is not a real product. I actually envisioned something like this several years ago and wrote up a web page about it, but I can't find that - either it got deleted somehow or it just never got indexed well; I have searched long and hard but cannot find it.
6 commentsWhy I bought an iPad - the perfect second computer - or the only computer for some!
iPads are very popular today. I'm seeing them replace computers for some users. Many buyers don't understand the available options and particularly the data plan. Learn why I own an iPad here.
5 commentsiPad 4.2 OS update adds folders, multitasking and more
The first thing I did was set up folders. This is simple - just select and hold down any app until the flashing starts, just as though you were going to move or delete it. Then drag it on top of another app. A folder is created an automatically named. You can change the name at any time - even after exiting this mode. The only problem I had was that Apple's Books app resisted being put into the folder where I had already put the Kindle app and some other reading related apps.
2 commentsStreaming movies and TV - Apple, Roku or something else?
One of my neighbors just called me to ask some questions about Netflix and other movie streaming. She probably expected a quick answer, but we actually talked for several minutes. What to buy is not necessarily simple to decide and the various products that can provide these services are in constant flux.
6 commentsGPS features to look for the next time I buy
GPS features keep getting better and better. These are some of the things I will be looking for when we replace our current GPS device.
