Converting from forced hot air heat to baseboard or wall radiators
I grew up in a home with large, old fashioned radiators. The house was built in 1900, in the typical style with a massive central fireplace. As radiators had only been invented a few decades earlier, the house may have originally depended on that fireplace for heat, but when our family moved in, ornate Victorian radiators were already there.
3 commentsAdsense Basics - what 7 years of running Adsense has taught me
If you have signed up for Google's Adsense program and figured out how to get ads running on your website or your pages on someone else's site, you may still be confused about what to do next and what to expect.
94 commentsScrap jewelry, copper, silver and gold coins - hoarding, melting and collecting
Nobody pays the actual metal value. Refiners have costs and even without that, you usually aren't selling to the actual refiner. In many cases, you aren't even selling to someone who actually is selling to the refiner - you'll be selling to someone who sells to someone else and maybe they eventually haul everything off to be melted.
8 commentsHow to use Quickbooks in a cash basis business
While there are advantages and disadvantages to both, cash basis is often easier for a small businessperson to understand: you record income for taxing authorities when you actually receive or pay out money. If you wake up in a blizzard and find yourself without heat as I did this morning, there are a few things that you might want to try before you give up and call for repair. Even if you can't fix the problem yourself, you may be able to determine at least some information about what is causing the malfunction and that information can sometimes be very useful to the people who will ultimately come to fix it.

I was surprised to find that there isn't much available. While there is a wealth of information available on-line, apparently few have thought about the tremendous advantage of mobile apps. After all, coins are found everywhere, often under circumstances where a computer is not available. A dedicated app to provide grading, pricing and rarity info would likely be quite popular. I'm thinking particularly of subscription services such as the well known "Grey Sheet" (Coin Dealers Newsletter) - havi
4 commentsWhy Windows 8 might Kill Microsoft
John Lennon was talking about world peace and the end of religion when he wrote that famous song. You might be easily forgiven if you assessed Microsoft's chances of going belly up as only slightly more likely than what that song imagined. Heck, you might be forgiven for thinking it's even less likely!
60 commentsThe pros and cons of Google Voice for small business

26 commentsBuy a bed warmer (heated mattress pad), not an electric blanket
Let's dispose of the electric blanket comparison first. These mattress pads are nothing like electric blankets. I'm sure electric blankets have improved over the years and are much better than the awful things I remember from forty years ago, but they still suffer from several disadvantages.
